Position Description

A Lumber Grader involves a mix of practical skills, knowledge, and certification. As a Grader you will inspect and grade milled, rough hardwood lumber.

Key Tasks Include:
• Examine, grade, and accurately mark lumber for processing.
• Apply grading rules and guidelines to determine the grade of lumber based on visual appearance, size, and characteristics.
• Tally pieces of lumber according to grade and board footage.
• Scale board footage and record results.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Collaborate with coworkers in a positive and respectful manner.
• Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience Required

1. Must have completed an approved NHLA lumber inspection course.
2. Knowledge of lumber species, characteristics, and terminology.
3. Ability to accurately assess lumber quality and defects.
4. Ability to positively and effectively communicate and engage with team members regarding grading results, quality issues, and recommendations for improvement.
5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as instructions, company communications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Education / Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Lumber Grader Certificate.
• Experience not required.

Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
• Prolonged periods standing and/or walking.
• Ability to climb stairs and move around a conveyor belt.
• Ability to work accurately and quickly at the required pace.
• Ability to work in an environment that experiences temperature changes.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
