Position Description

This position’s primary role is taking over existing areas of our domestic wood purchasing program, responsible for purchasing assigned inventory items, maintaining appropriate levels of inventory, and collaborating with internal customers to keep everyone informed of pricing and market trends. The Domestic Wood Products Purchasing Manager drives business value by maintaining, analyzing, and reporting consumption and price information to identify and deliver improvement. The individual in this position must competitively bid on wood product purchases, to identify and deliver cost reduction as well as contribute to process efficiency. Also, must establish and maintain purchase information in LumberTrack and on Excel Spreadsheets for Accounts Payable and Purchasing, consistent with company goals and specifications for quality and timeliness. The Domestic Wood Purchasing Manager is a key team member to ensure supply continuity and drive total value.

  • Analyze spend, source, bid, negotiate, make commitments, maintain records for assigned responsibilities and
    support operations. Establish purchases of materials in support of operations within assigned buyer areas.
  • Detailed analysis and interpretation of all data maintained, including but not limited to spend, categories,
    suppliers, purchase orders, bids, and other transactions or analysis as required.
  • Support and deliver continuous improvement opportunities related to assigned buy space, procure to pay
    process, or other responsibilities.
  • Manage and maintain a large lumber inventory.
  • Maintain contracts, databases, information records, or source lists.
  • Visit domestic sawmills to create and maintain relationships.
  • Actively working with Production to evaluate the quality of the wood products purchased.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Purchasing Director.
  • Stay involved and active in relevant Associations and working groups.
  • Be an ambassador and continuously improve upon company’s reputation within the sawmill and business community.

**This position can be worked remotely but will require some travel. The ideal candidate should reside in the Northeast/Midwest.

Skills & Experience Required

• BS Degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Supply Chain Management, or related field.
• Demonstrated analytical skills with statistics, and report writing skills.
• Five years minimum experience purchasing domestic hardwood products.
• NHLA Grading knowledge and experience.
• 25% to 40% travel to sawmills. Travel to customers will be on an as needed basis.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (emphasizing spreadsheets, presentations, and databases).
• Act decisively with a sense of urgency, but able to collaborate and build alignment.
• Must take initiative and be comfortable working independently on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Capable of prioritizing, meeting deadlines, and delivering results.
• Requires demonstrated communication skills, clear articulate speech, good listening skills and the ability to generate clear, concise written documentation.
• Ability to influence through indirect authority is essential.
