Thank you so much to Difficult Creek Lumber in Scottsburg, VA for welcoming our National Inspectors out to perform a Yield Analysis! This is an excellent investment in your business, and we greatly appreciate Blake Tucker for trusting in NHLA.
Although tedious, a continuing series of yield analyses is likely the single most profitable thing a hardwood mill can embrace. While most mill managers can subjectively state their over and under run, it is almost always compared to board foot in versus board feet out...useful... but deceptive. A real yield analysis compares cubic feet in versus REAL board feet out...allowing the mill manager to KNOW their Lumber Recovery Factor (LRF). Combining that data with yield in terms of board feet lumber per grade, per mill log grade gives the most valuable data any hardwood mill can obtain.
While softwood mills continuously gather and analyze yield data , and the associated benefit of KNOWING what log grade of what species, diameter and volume allows for the most profit, few hardwood mills have discovered that advantage.
The USDA Forest Products Laboratory, the USDA Northeastern Area Research stations, and a handful of state DNRs used to offer software, physical assistance in mill studies, and continued yield research. All that came to end as political forces demanded USDA drop hardwood mill physical and financial analyses. Instead, their focus now is sustained yield, workplace diversity, and a host of other mostly inane ....but politically correct studies. What a sad reality.
